The men's Buster Basketball team played Allen County in the first round of the playoffs March 4. Winning this game would mean the Busters would make an appearance in the Jayhawk Conference Tournament. With a score of (73-59) the Buster did just that.
In the first half the Busters maintained the lead the entire game, keeping Allen County's posts out of play. The Busters played a two three zone, forcing the guards of Allen County to do all the work. Allen County had few looks to their posts, which forced them to try and score three pointers during the first half. With a score of (18-10) in the middle of the first half, the Busters were not only doing what was needed to be done on the defensive side of the ball, but offensively as well. The Busters got the ball to their posts and also took the perimeter so that were given to them. The Busters ended the half leading (33-19).
In the second half, the Busters came out with the same strategy playing a two three zone that Allen County couldn't score against in the first half.
Ball movement was a key component in this victory. No one Buster tried to be an individual in this team victory over Allen County.
This win put the men's basketball team on the road to Wichita to play Coffeyville in the Jayhawk Conference Tournament March 9. Beating No. 1 Coffeyville in the first round of the Jayhawk Conference Tournament (81-69) obtained them a spot in the semi-finals. Then they played Butler, in which they came out of this game with another victory with a score of (59-54 ). That put the Busters in the Championship round of the Tournament. Then the Busters faced Cowley Community College and won with a score of (66-56). Thomas Manzano and Richard Thomas were named the Region VI All Tournament team. Thomas Manzano was also named Tournament MVP.
"It has been 53 years since the Busters have made an appearance to the (NJCAA) Tournament, so this puts us on the map for what the coach and players have done," Larson Athletic Director said. "It was amazing to see how the team plays off of each other's strengths.
Larson agreed that they control their own destiny and that this team has overcome diversity during this season.
Larson said, " I give whole hearted congratulations to Baumann and staff. They watched teams, implemented a strategy at practice [the team] worked day and night and players did a good job of executing strategy coaches provided."
The Busters landed themselves a spot to play in the National Junior Community College Association Tournament on March 17. The Busters are due to play Highland Ill.,that Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. at the sports arena in Hutchinson, Kan.

The Buster did a heck of a good job this year in basketball. Hope to see them get even farther next year. Good story and very detailed. I felt like I was right next to the court watching. (Continued…)
