This week the athletic department saw coaching changes in both volleyball and women' soccer.
Garden City Community College volleyball coach Nikola Petrovic has resigned after a 4-24 record on the season. The 2009 season included a 15 game losing streak and nine players either quitting or being dismissed form the team.
"Anybody that knows me I am not a big person for change," Athletic Director Bob Larson said of the resignation, "but sometimes change is necessary and good."
"I feel really good with what I accomplished and what I did." Petrovic was the head coach at GCCC for four years upon which he compiled a 51-78 win loss record. He was 15-50 over the last two season.
"You have to want to coach at Garden City to be successful," Second time sophomore David Johnston said of the situation "don't get me wrong he was a good coach."
The season ended for the volleyball team on Friday with a first round loss in Dodge City to Hutchinson in the Region 6 tournament. The Busters were swept by the Blue Dragons in three sets 25-13, 25-11, and 25-11
Garden City's volleyball did not have a lot of stability this year with the loss of nine players leaving the team with only six meaning no reserves for the squad. GCCC had just one sophomore, Brittany DeGane, and the pissibilty of returning five players remains open for the team.
"I didn't know he was fired," Sophomore Dominque Howard, " I didn't even know that was happening inside the program."
Andrea Fernandez has been hired as the new women's soccer coach here at Garden City Community College, and already has made an impact by setting up meetings and workouts with the players.
Seven applicants applied for the women's head coaching job.
"She is a great young lady, full of pep and energy, and thrilled to take over as head coach here" said Larson
She played soccer at Western Illinois from 2001-2005, a Division I school.
Fernandez, 26, replaces Jeff Huffman who coached the women for five years but was fired in October. Huffman lead the team to a 4-10 record last season.
Players are reacting well to the coaching change, and are excited for next season.
"She gives our team a lot of excitement for next year, she has already starting recruiting players" said Brooke Feikert
The spring semester will be a good test for the women as they will be competing in a few scrimmages.

Sometimes change is necessary and good, we will see what the new coach will give to the team.
